COMP3292: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PROJECT (40 CREDITS)

Prerequisites

  • Software Applications (COMP2071).

Corequisites

  • Advanced Artificial Intelligence (20 credits) (COMP3311). Or Advanced Artificial Intelligence (40 credits) (COMP3352).

Excluded Combination of Modules

  • Software Engineering Project (COMP3282), Computer Science Project (COMP3012).

Aims

  • To allow the students to conduct a substantial piece of academic, scientific or engineering work using Artificial Intelligence techniques as an individual initiative, under the supervision of a member of academic staff.
  • This work will be both written and presented orally in a scholarly fashion.

Content

  • Projects are inevitably and deliberately very varied in the topic they address and in the type of approach required.
  • For example they may be practical, theoretical or mathematical.
  • For an Artificial Intelligence project the main focus of the work will be within some domain of Artificial Intelligence.
  • All projects allow opportunity for initiative by the student and are open-ended in that they offer scope for considerably more work than can be achieved in the available time.
  • Management of the project is the responsibility of the student.
  • The student, however, should seek, and take advantage of, the advice of his or her appointed supervisor in this task.
  • One of the main outcomes of the project is a significant report.

  • To write and present a scientific report based upon detailed background research, demonstrating strong implementation and evaluation techniques through a substantial piece of work involving the appropriate use of AI approaches.

    Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

    • Students are taught the expectations of the management of projects through the lecture series and personal subject based tuition is given within their tutorials.
    • Students will receive regular progress meetings with their supervisors giving feedback on the suitability of the implementation and scientific report.
    • The research conducted and the implementation developed will be written up in the form of the scientific report.

    This is given to students by means of the project meeting review forms and the formal deliverable evaluation document used by all tutors.
