- Satisfactory completion of year abroad or equivalent.

- Spoken Competence in Japanese (EAST2111) AND Written Competence in Japanese (EAST2101).

Aims
- To introduce students to the broad variety of textual sources in Japanese.
- To develop basic skills in Japanese-to-English translation in the three key fields of historical, literary and cultural texts.
Content
- Students will translate a selection of texts from historical, literary and cultural sources from Japanese to English.
- Students will present their translations in class time to compare the actual translation and methods used to reach it with their peers.
- Seminars using English-language texts will also be held to provide the general academic background in English to the themes raised in the Japanese texts for translation.
