Aims

  • To introduce students to Modern East Asian intellectual and political thought in China and Japan.
  • It will focus on the development of concepts of the 'state', assess the methods and effectiveness with which they were applied in the two respective countries.
  • The module is predominantly lecture based, but will include regular seminars to provide a forum for student led discussion.

Content

  • An examination of the development of political thought in Japan and China.
  • Initially, the module will introduce classical and medieval East Asian thought as the foundation of modern political thought.
  • This will be followed by more detailed consideration of the emergence of political ideologies and systems in the modern period such as nationalism, communism, militarism and self-strengthening.
