Aims

  • To introduce in English translation the literature, theatre and aesthetics of pre-modern Japan. Students will explore the development of Japanese literature and literary aesthetics from the first recorded texts of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki to the end of the Edo Period when Japan was forced to open to the West.To familiarize students with indigenous Japanese literary forms before the impact of Western literary forms and thought.

Content

  • Japanese literature will be divided into four periods, the course focusing on the major literary styles of each: the early classical period or the age of the Manyoshu (up to 794); the classical or Heian Period (794 - 1194); the medieval period (1192 - 1603); the pre-modern era or Edo Period (1603-1868).
  • The course will be made up of 19 lectures and 3 seminars. The seminars will require students to analyse an issue in groups, present this analysis to the rest of the class and lead discussion on the issue concerned.
