Aims

  • To offer students the opportunity to study a subject which is not otherwise covered by the syllabus, or to study it to greater depth than otherwise allowed.
  • To encourage students to show initiative in identifying and pursuing a topic appropriate for individual study within the field of East Asian Studies.
  • To encourage students to show initiative in conducting research in East Asia and the West which makes use of their language skills, trains them in the use of library and archive sources, and promotes in them the habit of independent critical and deductive thought.

Content

  • Students have a free choice within the field of Chinese and/or Japanese studies, subject to guidance from their Department tutor as to the feasibility of their proposed topic for study at this level and within the time constraints.
  • The dissertation must not normally exceed 10,000 words and should contain evidence of the use of Chinese and/or Japanese sources.
  • Attendance at the Dissertation Workshop is required.
