Aims

  • To provide students with a good understanding of some aspects of the contemporary culture of another European country and to enrich their understanding of Europe through the living out of a comparison between two of its national cultures.
  • to allow students a period of extensive study, alongside 'home' students, in the language that they are studying.
  • to extend and improve students' formal and colloquial linguistic competence.
  • to enable students to compare the treatment of European history and/or culture and/or politics as presented from two different national standpoints.

Content

  • With the exception of the portfolio, the module content is determined by the content of the modules provided by the French, German or Spanish university.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the course students will have: become fluent in their language of study, to a level approaching that of a native speaker.
  • have begun to consider their dissertation topics and will have carried out a preliminary survey of the resources available to them in their language of study.
  • built up a body of personal and documented experience enabling them to demonstrate both multiple perspectives upon the country concerned and comparative perspectives upon aspects of European society.

      Summative Assessment

      The assessment of host modules is determined by within the host institution. Students are normally expected to pass all host modules. In addition, students are required to compile a portfolio to be submitted by July 1st at the end of their year abroad (typical contents would be 50 images, 10 texts, 100 references, 2000 interconnecting words).

      Attendance at all activities marked with this symbol will be monitored. Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
