Aims

  • To develop student self-sufficiency by enabling the students to learn for themselves some selected topic in mathematical sciences.

Content

  • Students choose one of a number of offered topics for each of which a book, which is suitable for independent study at this level, is specified.
  • For each topic offered the specified text, or identified parts of it define the syllabus.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the module students will: have developed mathematical self-sufficiency by studying independently some selected topic in mathematical sciences.
  • be able to solve novel and/or complex problems in that topic.
  • have a systematic and coherent understanding of theoretical mathematics in that topic.
  • have acquired a coherent body of knowledge and understanding to reproduce theoretical mathematics in the field of that topic.

    • Students will be able to study independently to further their knowledge of a topic.

    Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

    • Subject material assigned for independent study develops the ability to acquire knowledge and understanding without dependence on lectures.
    • Formatively assessed assignments provide practice in the application of logic and high level of rigour as well as feedback for the students and the lecturer on students' progress.
    • The end-of-year examination assesses the knowledge acquired.
