Prerequisites

  • Elementary Arabic 1 (MEIS1012) AND Elementary Arabic 2 (MEIS1022) OR Arabic at an equivalent level.

Corequisites

  • Intermediate Arabic (MEIS2012).

Aims

  • To provide students with an introduction to the reading and study of Arabic literary texts in the original language.
  • To develop students' ability to handle extended texts in Arabic, to develop their powers of literary criticism, and to encourage an awareness of the social and cultural contexts in which the works studied were written.

Content

  • Modern Literature: Zakariyya Tamir, 3 short stories.
  • Yahya Haqqi, 'Qindil Umm Hashim.
  • Selected poems from Badawi, 'An Anthology of Modern Arabic Verse', and other sources.
  • Classical Literature: Extracts from the 'Sahih' of al-Bukhari.
  • Qur'an, suras 1, 19, 91-96.
  • Selections from 'Early Arabic Poetry'.
  • Selected passages from al-Ghazali, 'al-Munqidh' and other selected passages.
