  • For Sport in the Community students, Sport and Performance 2, Sport and Exercise Physiology II, Sport and Education, Research Methods, Combined Honours students : refer to degree regulations.

Aims

  • To allow students to develop:
  • a personal philosophy of coaching.
  • a sound knowledge and understanding of the cyclical process of planning, implementing and evaluating coaching programmes.

Content

  • The module is designed to explore both theoretical issues and practical considerations in coaching.
  • There is a focus on the coaching of young performers, although other performer groups are addressed.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Students should be able to: discuss how to plan safe and effective programmes of work to enhance performance in a variety of sports.
  • explain how components of fitness can be developed within a progressive programme.
  • discuss the work of key, relevant agencies.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • explain techniques and tools employed in the analysis of performance and how information obtained may be used to inform planning and coaching.
  • analyse a range of coaching styles and examine coach effectiveness.
