Aims

  • To provide final honours students with the opportunity to investigate why globalization is one of the most important issues facing business by: Evaluating critically globalization forces and institutions.
  • Appreciating the impact on business policies, processes and performance.
  • Exploring unresolved issues.

Content

  • The module examines why globalization is one of the most important issues facing business.
  • It focuses on the global business environment, including institutional and policy environment and the impact on the firm.
  • The module critically investigates globalization from different levels: global, regional, national, industry and company.
  • It examines the evolution of international/transnational business, internationalisation processes of the firm, alliance capitalism, typologies of transnational corporations, networks and the digital revolution and unresolved issues surrounding the globalization debate.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the module, students are expected:
  • To have a comprehensive understanding of globalization from different multidisciplinary and theoretical perspectives.
  • To be familiar with the impact of globalisation upon business organisations and the wider business environment.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • To have developed critical analytical abilities to be able to investigate the impact of globalization at different levels: global, regional, national, industry, company and some corporate functions.
  • To have further developed your writing and presentational skills.
Key Skills:
  • Written Communication - by completing summative assessment.
  • Planning, Organisation and Time Management - by observing the strict assignment deadlines and preparing for the summative assessment.
  • Problem Solving and Analysis - by applying the necessary analytical skills, as well as the ability to manipulate concepts in business environment, in undertaking assessed work.
  • Initiative - by searching relevant literature and information in preparation of the summative assignment.
  • Computer Literacy and Information Retrieval - by word-processing the assignments, undertaking bibliographical search and information retrieval for the summative assignment.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Teaching is by lectures, tutorials and support for student-centred learning. Learning takes place through attendance at lectures, preparation for and participation in tutorial classes and private study (inlcuding student-centred learning). Formative assessment is by means of 1500 word essay. Summative assessment is by means of an unseen written examination plus 2500 word essay.
