Aims

  • Introduction of speaking and listening skills.
  • Enhance ability to write in Standard English.
  • Promote reading with comprehension, purpose and reason.
  • Provide a basis for further study.

Content

  • The module will provide an opportunity to read texts from fiction, non-fiction and media.
  • These texts will provide the basis for students to engage in discussions to develop their ability to explain, describe, narrate and explore.
  • These texts will provide the basis for students to produce written work which uses standard English.

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the module students will have acquired the knowledge to be able to:
  • Communicate clearly, adapting their talk to different situations, using Standard English.
  • Participate in discussions.
  • Read a variety of texts making appropriate references to them and select material appropriate to their purpose.
  • Write effectively using Standard English, adapting their writing for a range of purposes and audience.
  • Use sentences, paragraphs and whole texts with accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation.
