Aims
- The aims of the this module are to: introduce students to a variety of geographical environments, introduce students to a variety of methods in geographical analysis, enable students to select appropriate methods to study diverse geographical issues.
Content
- Term 1: Lectures and practicals: The concepts of research design in Physical and Human Geography and familiarisation with the practical skills utilised by Geographers.
- Term 2: Skills workshops and field work to enable students to select appropriate methods to study diverse geographical environments.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- demonstrate familiarity with the range of geographical environments,
Subject-specific Skills:
- use a range of methods to undertake geographical analysis and research
- design simple research projects using a diversity of approaches and techniques.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Lectures to impart basic facts and information necessary to fulfil the aims of this course.
- Concepts introduced in lectures will be explored in more depth in practicals which will introduce students to research design.
- Skills workshops will introduce technical skills using a range of research methods applicable to geography.
- Fieldwork will introduce students to a diverse range of geographical environments and provide experience in project design and implementation.
- Students' knowledge of a range of geographical environments and skills will be assessed by workshop/field reports related to workshops and fieldwork.
