Aims
- To study in detail various dimensions of the complex relationship between Islam and politics.
- To encourage an appreciation of the diversity of opinion within contemporary Islamic thought, and the implications of this.
- To develop an awareness of the uses and influences of Islam in the domestic and international politics of the Muslim world.
- To underline the relevance of Islam's historical legacy for aspects of contemporary Islam.
Content
- Part 1 focuses on the theoretical dimension of the relationship between Islam and politics, exploring aspects of this through close study of the writings of contemporary Muslim writers and Islamists, and tracing the debate among them.
- Part 2 examines the actual experience of Islamist movements in Muslim countries, and the roles and uses of Islam 'on the ground' in the Muslim world.
