Aims

  • A Final year individual study project which aims to introduce students to research methods, the development of a coherent thesis and the study of a specific subject in depth, with limited supervision which aims to encourage individual research and initiative.

Content

  • Any subject relating to the Middle East for which there is sufficient and accessible primary material.
  • The student must submit a proposal justifying the topic selected and its feasibility.
  • The final subject matter will be agreed by the student and his/her supervisor, subject to approval by the IMEIS Board of Studies.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • The student should have acquired the ability to construct a bibliography, formulate a research question, and bring together information from a variety of sources, including primary where available, and synthesise them into a coherent whole with a clear argument, recognisable structure, and accurately referenced throughout with either footnotes or endnotes.
  • While the student will be afforded limited supervision, a key learning outcome will be to show individual initiative and an ability to work alone.
