Aims

  • To build on and develop first-year work in 'Techniques of Composition', to allow the student to become acquainted with the repertoire of Mozart quartets, and the techniques used by this composer in his corpus of works for the genre, and also to gain 'hands-on' experience.

Content

  • This 'hands-on', course builds upon work done at Level 1 in 'Techniques of Composition'.
  • Through a study of Mozart's mature string quartets, a deeper insight will be gained into the style of the classical quartet and, in particular, the sonata principle, central to musical thinking of the era.
  • Students will be expected to develop their proficiency in writing tonal harmony and counterpoint, and will be expected to demonstrate, through imitation, an understanding of the technique and style of Mozart's work in the genre.

Formative Assessment:

Students will be asked to prepare weekly assignments for the tutorials. These may be either analytical exercises or technical exercises in composition.


Attendance at all activities marked with this symbol will be monitored. Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
