Prerequisites

  • B or above at A level in a foreign European language or its equivalent.

Corequisites

  • None.

Excluded Combination of Modules

  • Russian Language 1A (RUSS1161). Not available to students following the European Studies programme.

Aims

  • To provide students with a sound basis in Russian grammar and to enable them to acquire a limited but practical range of vocabulary.
  • The intention is to begin to use the language actively at an early stage and to instil an awareness of its potential for expression.

Content

  • The module is based on a published textbook and supplementary coursebook.
  • The different strands of the module are: a) grammar, b) texts, c) language workshop, d) exercises, e) oral, f) language laboratory.

    • Students should be able to converse, write and read in Russian with some fluency, and will have covered the basics of Russian grammar by completing the majority of the units in the textbook, "Colloquial Russian".

      Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

      • In order that the students achieve competence in all the main language skills, a variety of methods will be employed: oral, translation, grammatical exercises, reading texts, language laboratory.
      • These methods will allow the students to become familiar with essential grammatical concepts and vocabulary and to use them in different learning contexts.
