- An A-level pass in a foreign language.

- Modern European Languages, Combined Honours and all Joint and 'with' programmes; Russian Language 1A (RUSS1161) and Russian Translation 1A (RUSS1131) or Russian Language 1B (RUSS1042). Others: see Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

- This module is designed to give an introduction to Russian literature of the early nineteenth century through an examination of selected works by major Russian authors.

- Lectures provide background information about the authors and the contemporary context.
- Seminars aim to develop skills in literary analysis through discussion of such issues as characterisation and narrative structure.
- As the module is open to students who have no Russian, English is the language of instruction and the texts are read in translation.
