RUSS3041: RUSSIAN TRANSLATION

Prerequisites

• Russian Language 2B (RUSS2032) OR an equivalent qualification to the satisfaction of the Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Corequisites

• Modern European Languages, Combined Honours and all Joint and 'with' programmes: Russian Language 4(I) (RUSS3031). Others: see Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Excluded Combination of Modules

• None.

Aims

• To develop the student's facility for translating from and into Russian.
• The expansion of vocabulary to cover a broad range of general literary and journalistic Russian and instilling critical appreciation of nuance and varieties of expression.

Content

• The module will consist of two weekly classes devoted to set passages for translation in class and/or assignments.
• One class is devoted to Russian-English translation and one to English-Russian.
• Class time is spent largely on critical examination of previously completed written assignments and, when time allows, to pointing out problems in the next one with discussion on how best to solve them.
• Time is also allowed for critical examination of published translations.

Learning Outcomes

• By the end of this module students should be able to demonstrate competence in writing grammatically and lexically correct Russian and the ability to adequately translate original texts into both English and Russian.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

• This module is taught by means of two classes devoted to set passages for translation both in class and as assignments. Class time is spent largely on unseen translation and critical examination of previously completed written assignments. One weekly class is devoted to English Russian translation and one fortnightly to Russian English. Students are required to attend all classes and are expected to prepare themselves for classes and participate actively in discussions.

Formative Assessment:

Regular written assignments.
