Aims
- Build on the students' knowledge and understanding of acquiring and developing skills (Level 1 module Developing Skill in Sport).
- Enable students to develop a personal philosophy of coaching.
- Provide students with a sound knowledge and understanding of the cyclical process of planning, implementing and evaluating coaching programmes.
- Develop students' awareness of the work of key, relevant agencies.
- The knowledge and understanding gained through studying this module should provide the students with a suitable basis for their Community Placement in Sport (Level 3).
Content
- The module will begin with an examination of coaching philosophy and key issues in planning and performance enhancement programme. Generic principles will be set out and specific issues relating to the coaching of children and young people will be explored.
- Students will examine key principles and issues related to learning, performance, techniques and skills within the practical coaching context. This examination will be used to devise and evaluate specific strategies to enchance learning and performance.
- Coaching styles will be addressed with particular emphasis on the influence of these styles on participation, performance and relationships.
- The module identifies a variety of techniques and tools employed in the analysis of sports performance and coaching behaviour. This component of the module will cover the range of techniques currently employed from basic observation analysis to the use of advanced technology.
- The module will conclude with an examination of coach education and development. The role of sportscoachUK and National Governing Bodies (NGB's) will be examined.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Explain techniques and tools employed in the analysis of performance and how information obtained may be used to inform planning and coaching.
- Analyse a range of coaching styles and examine coach effectiveness.
- Discuss the work of key, relevant agencies.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Discuss how to plan safe and effective programmes of work to enhance performance in a variety of sports from a coaching perspective.
Key Skills:
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- The module is designed to explore both theoretical issues and practical considerations in coaching. There is a focus on the coaching of young performers, although other performer groups are addressed.
- Lectures and the opportunity to participate in practical workshop sessions are offered.
- Students will be assessed on an optional formative assignment, a summative assignment of 2,500 words and a 2 hour examination which will assess the learning outcomes of the module.
