  • Sport in the Community students: none; Combined Social Sciences students: SPRT1201, SPRT2061 and SPRT2161.

Aims

  • to allow the students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of physical activity as an essential component of a healthy lifestyle.

Content

  • The emphasis in this module will be upon promoting an active lifestyle.
  • Students will study research evidence relating to physical activity and will complete a research project in this area.
  • Consideration will be given to risks associated with participation in physical activity, with the practical component of the module being centred upon outdoor and adventurous activities.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • On completion of the module, students should be able to:
  • provide a rationale and justification for each individual to be physically active.
  • identify potential health risks associated with participating in activity.
  • identify and explain the potential determinants affecting physical activity in young people.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • undertake and evaluate the monitoring of children's physical activity levels.
