SPRT3122: DISSERTATION IN SPORT IN THE COMMUNITY

Prerequisites

  • Sport in the Community Students: none; Combined Social Sciences students: SPRT1201, SPRT2061 and SPRT2161.

Corequisites

  • Sport in the Community students: Sport and Exercise Physiology III, Sport Psychology, Physical Activity and Health, Community Placement in Sport.

Excluded Combination of Modules

  • None.

Aims

  • to give students an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to investigate a chosen topic within sport.

Content

  • Final year students will be expected to complete a dissertation of 12,000 words.
  • Students will have the option of either: - working on a topic currently investigated by academic staff - a recognised research study based on one aspect of the information studied on the degree programme - a desk top study (i.e. history, law).

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Students should be able to:
  • demonstrate an in depth knowledge and understanding of the subject under investigation.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • produce an in-depth critical analysis of a chosen problem in a sport related area.
  • survey and abstract literature relevant to the topic and programme of work, assess the validity of the findings and interpret them with respect to related published work.
Key Skills:
  • plan and devise a programme of work applicable to investigating the defined problem

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • students will receive individual supervision and the module will be assessed entirely by 12000 word dissertation which will assess all learning outcomes.
