Aims

  • Further consideration of the themes developed in Germany in the Making I (1060-1198) in context of the significantly changed circumstances of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Content

  • The module will explore further the social, political, economic and cultural development of medieval Germany, in a period in which the patterns of life and modes of thought established in the preceding two centuries were subjected to a series of sharp challenges. Matters for consideration include: the crises facing the imperial monarchy and the growing fragmentation of power and authority in Germany; the development of towns, with distinctive forms of social, ecomonic, political and cultural life; the consolidation of the German presence in the east, and the challenges to which it was subject; and the development of the German princely territories as frameworks for political and social life.
