Aims
- Continued study of political relationships in the British Isles into the period 1216-1328 at an advanced level, extending work undertaken in Kings and Princes in the British Isles I, and normally leading to a dissertation in this field.
Content
- The module will extend the study of political relationships in Britain and Ireland into a period when the increasingly powerful English and Scottish kingships suppressed most of the lesser royal and princely regimes within the islands, and also clashed with each other. Central themes will include jurisdictional changes, the development of the state, and questions of national identitiy, all of which demand understanding of the wider European as well as the insular context.
