Aims
- Introduction to the advanced study of early-modern English social and cultural history (c.1500 - c.1800), including an examination of the existing historiography, current problems, and sources available for research and writing on this subject.
Content
- The module will address selected aspects of early modern social and cultural histoy, reflecting current debate on the subject, and the particular interests of the student. Major topics include social change, the history of gender and the household, social relations, elite versus poular culture, the spread of ideas orally and through the medium of print, and the development of political consciousness.
Learning Outcomes
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to
the learning outcomes of the module
- Individual students will be directed to an existing body of literature relevant to the subject under study, and advised on the potential primary sources that should be consulted. Regular meetings between student and supervisor will take place, both in the setting up of the dissertation topic and while the research and writing are taking place.
