Aims

• Introduction to the advanced study of US business and labour history.

Content

• The module will address selected aspects of U.S. business and labor history, reflecting current debate on the subject, and the particular interests of the student. Major topics which might be included are the historical development of entrepreneurial and managerial capitalist firms; the internal structures and operations of businesses; innovation; marketing; public relations and government-business relations; the development and particular nature of the American industrial 'working class'; the impact of immigration and internal migration on its composition and structure; the problems of building secure working-class institutions, and developing their political voice, in a liberal capitalist society. Because of the particular strengths of the University Library in primary sources, it is anticipated that students would concentrate on the period c. 1880-1920.

• Objectives are to be met through a programme of intensive directed reading, regular discussion of issues arising from the reading, and the production of an extensive piece of writing on an agreed subject.
