Aims

• Introduction to the advanced study of Twentieth-century Imperial History.

Content

• The module will address selected aspects of the Twentieth-century history of the European empires,reflecting current debate on the subject, and particular interests of student. Major topics covered include the establishment of effective imperial rule, the economy and politics of imperial rule, the nature of imperial decision-making and the construction of colonial authority at the local level.

• Objectives are to be met through a programme of Intensive directed reading, regular discussion of issues arising from the reading, and the production of an extensive piece of writing on an agreed subject.
