Aims

• Introduction to the advanced study of European decolonisation

Content

• The module will address selected aspects of the history of decolonisation by European powers in the twentieth century debate on the subject and the particular interest of the student. Major topics covered include the impact of the first and second world wars, the rise of nationalism, plus the domestic and international political context pertaining to the formal end of European empires.

• Objectives are to be met through a programme of intensive directed reading, regular discussion of issues arising from the reading, and the production of an extensive piece of writing on an agreed subject.
