Aims

  • Introduction to the advanced study of modern social and labour history in a regional context.

Content

  • The module will address selected aspects of modern social and labour history, reflecting current debate on the subject, and the particular interests of the student. For most of the period the regional economy was based on coal, and the module will explore industrial relations in the mining industry, the sociology of coal communities and coal's decline. Coal was critical in both world wars and their impact on the region will be a prominent theme in the module. Other topics covered will include the response to mass unemployment between the wars, measures to deal with the region's apalling housing problems, attempts to regenerate the region through industrial diversification and schemes of training and migration, and an investigation of the cultural life of the region concentrating on projects to define 'the north'.
