Aims

  • Further study of The Social and Labour History of North East England since 1870 at an advanced level, extending work undertaken in The Social and Labour History of North East England since 1870, I, and normally leading to a dissertation in this field.

Content

  • The module will address selected aspects North East history since 1870, reflecting current debate on the subject, and the particular interests of the student. For most of the period the regional economy was based on coal, and the module will explore industrial relations in the mining industry, the sociology of coal communities and coal's decline. Coal was critical in both world wars and their impact on the region will be a prominent theme in the module. Other topics covered will include the response to mass unemployment between the wars, measures to deal with the region's appalling housing problems, attempts to regenerate the region through industrial diversification and schemes of training and migration, and an investigation of the cultural life of the region concentrating on projects to define 'the north'.
