Aims

  • Introduction to the advanced study of aspects of the inter-relationship between Britain and Ireland, from the period of the 1789 rebellion to the present.

Content

  • The module will address problems in Ireland, and the British response to them (where appropriate), reflecting current debate on the subject and the particular interests of the student. Major topics can include aspects of the political, social and religious history of the two countries, but the module could, alternatively, concentrate on the micro-history of a particular Irish region, covering several aspects simultaneously.

        • Objectives are to be met through a programme of intensive directed reading, regular discussion of issues arising from the reading, and the production of an extensive piece of writing on an agreed subject.
