Aims
- To enable students to gain knowledge and understanding of an aspect of the development of Durham cathedral as a building and as an institution from its first foundation to the end of the pontificate of Ranulf Flambard (1099-1128), with regard also to developments down to the pontificate of Hugh de Puiset (1153-95) where these are of particular relevance. A programme of independent bibliographical research and reading focused on a particular theme or area of research to be selected according to the special interests of particular students and leading to an essay to be defined on the basis of that reading.

- the character of the ecclesiastical community of Durham before 1083 and the impact of the Norman conquest
- the design of the cathedral in all of its aspects
- the development of the priory's library, especially in the light of surviving manuscripts
- the organisation on the post -1083 priory and its relationship to the bishops
- the powers and rights of the bishops and their political position

There is no seperate formative assessment, but at least one initial draft of the summative essay will be handed in for comment. The tutor will provide regular oral feedback on work in progress.
