Prerequisites

  • Russian Language 1B (RUSS1042), or Russian Language 1A (RUSS1161) and Russian Translation 1A (RUSS1131) or an equivalent qualification to the satisfaction of the Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Corequisites

  • Modern Languages, Combined Honours and all Joint and 'with' programmes: Russian Grammar and Composition (RUSS2181) OR Russian Grammar and Composition (with Year Abroad Essay) (RUSS2171). Others: see Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Aims

  • To introduce the work of the major Russian writers of fiction in the 19th and 20th centuries
  • To contextualise the development of Russian fiction within the broader political and cultural environment

Content

  • This module covers the main writers and trends of the period, focusing specifically on shorter fiction

Learning Outcomes

  • On completion of this module students will have developed a good knowledge of the literary and cultural environment and of the careers of the writers studied.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • They will acquire fundamental skills in literary analysis
Key Skills:
  • They will further develop skills in written argument and oral presentation

  • In the lectures students will acquire an overall view of Russian literature in this period.
