Aims
- To ensure that students understand how financial management as a whole is related to corporate objectives in the financial marketplace. In particular the module demonstrates the importance of planning and control as an aid to effective decision-making and gives an insight into the practical aspect of corporate structure and growth by acquisition.

Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- By the end of the module, students will have:
- a depth of knowledge and understanding of the major sectors of financial services activity and the types of activity undertaken.
Subject-specific Skills:
- By the end of the module, students will have:
- specialist knowledge of and the ability to discuss, analyse and critically evaluate theory relevant to financial services activity e.g. investment theory and theory relevant to the operation and development of the sector;
- specialist knowledge of and the ability to discuss, analyse and critically evaluate factors influencing the operation and development of the sector;
- specialist knowledge of and the ability to discuss, analyse and critically evaluate contemporary issues in financial services;
- the ability to decide on appropriate advanced techniques of analysis and inquiry within the financial services field.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- The module is delivered in discrete Units. These are designed to enable the learning outcomes to be achieved through a combination of specially written material, directed reading, reflection through self-assessed assignments and guidance for further reading. Module tutors provide feedback on formative work and are available for individual consultation as necessary (by email, telephone, post or fax).
- The written assignment will test students’ understanding of relevant concepts and their ability to apply and interpret what they have learned to the analysis of a particular issue in depth.
