- B in German at A level (or its equivalent).
Corequisites
- Modern Languages, Combined Honours and all Joint and 'with' programmes: German Language 1(I) (GERM1011). Other: see Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Aims
- To enable students to understand the development of the modern German-speaking countries through the study of the changes their political boundaries have undergone and the influences which have shaped their culture.
Content
- A range of materials in various media is used.
- Two topics are studied from the following list in any given year:
- (a) The concept of 'Nation' and the problematical nature of German nationhood.
- (b) Popular uprisings and revolutions.
- (c) Nature and Technology in Germany.
