Aims

  • To allow students to undertake an individual, research-based project within an industrial context. The project will allow students to deal with a technical topic of depth and challenge.

Content

  • The exact content of the project will be decided in consultation with the academic supervisor, company representative and the student. The project will take into consideration the topics studied by the student during the first half of the MSc.

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • To be able to carry out extensive in depth work in a specialist area.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • To plan and manage an investigation of an industrial process or product design.
  • To utilise knowledge and skills acquired from the formal teaching process.
  • To be able to carry out work that is both relevant and realistic in industrial terms.
  • To be able to apply best practice research methods.
  • To produce an effective report which clearly presents and describes the investigations, results and conclusions.
Key Skills:
  • To transmit findings via oral and written presentations.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Regular meetings with supervisor to discuss project progress, planning, data collection, research methods and technical issues.
  • Mid-term assessment to ensure project is on track, a clear plan for completion is in place and that the standard of work is satisfactory.
  • Oral examination to allow detailed questions to be put to the student regarding the technical aspects of their work and also to assess oral communication skills.

Summative Assessment

Project Assessment will be carried out using the standard school criteria for marking projects. The report will be read by a member of staff other than the supervisor, who will then take part in an oral examination of the student with the supervisor. They will jointly then agree the mark and write a joint report on the examination. 18000 words 100%

Formative Assessment:

Feedback is an ongoing process delivered via tutorials with project supervisor (and collaborating company where appropriate).
