Prerequisites

  • Beginners Latin 1, or equivalent; Monuments and Memory in the age of Augustus (from 2005/6)

Aims

  • The aims of the module are to offer in-depth and intensive training in Latin syntax and to introduce students to the Aeneid in the original language.
  • The module will assume a good knowledge of Roman culture, as acquired in Monuments and Memory in the Age of Augustus.

Content

  • Focuses on two aspects of Latin.
  • It provides an in-depth analysis of syntax, which will enable students to have a good active and passive command of the Latin language.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to translate from English into Latin.
  • Introduces students to Virgil's Aeneid in the original.
  • Students will learn to read, scan and interpret a selection of passages from the poem and to link their interpretation to the contents of Monuments and Memory in the Age of Augustus.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • A knowledge of Latin morphology and syntax, to the level required for the independent reading and interpretation of continuous texts in the original language; a knowledge of a good range of vocabulary items.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • An ability to construe passages of continuous Latin with some use of dictionaries/word-lists; an ability to read, scan and interpret a selection from Virgil's Aeneid while drawing on knowledge and skills learned in the Level 1 module Monuments and Memory in the Age of Augustus.
Key Skills:
  • An ability to move between one language and another, in relation to a limited range of texts, with a significant degree of confidence.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Interactive and frequent language classes will be offered as the most appropriate and effective way of teaching.
  • Students will learn through regular preparation for the classes, short language tests, and interaction with the teacher and each in the process of learning.
  • The course will be assessed through an exam paper, which will be designed to test the students' ability to draw on their knowledge of Roman culture when interpreting specific passages from the Aeneid.

Summative Assessment

Examination 100% (one three-hour paper 100%).

Formative Assessment:

Homework in the form of language exercises and/or commentaries to be prepared in advance of every class. Formative tests in class. No collections.
