Aims

  • Enable the student to develop a comprehensive, applied knowledge and understanding of participation and performance enhancement programmes for children.
  • Develop key skills relating to the coaching of children.

Content

  • The students will undertake placements in primary schools. The placements will enable the students to apply the knowledge and understanding that they have gained throughout the preceding two years of the course. The students will coach primary school children in various sport skills, supported by both University straff and staff from the East Durham Partnership.
  • The students will be required to demonstrate an applied understanding in the following areas, as appropriate: The Coaching Process; Performance Preparation; Skill Development.
  • The Coaching Process: Planning a programme of coaching; Coaching methods; Analysing performance - Principles of goal setting; principles of training; planning cycles; time management; effective communication; demonstration and feedback; coaching behaviour and styles; performance observation, testing, recording and analysis.
  • Performance Preparation: Developing endurance; Developing strength and speed; Developing flexibility - Assessment of the physiological, psychological and nutritional demands of sport performance; enhancing performance capability - endurance.
  • Skill Development: Sport mechanics; Understanding and improving skill; Motivation and performance; Coaching children - Identification of skill development programmes: analysis of performance methods and relevance to the development of correct and efficient techniques; examination of coaching strategies used to enhance performers' motivation to learn and compete to enhance, maintain and refine skilled performance; modification of programmes for children and persons with disabilities; analysis of skill programme and effectiveness.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Synthesise knowledge about child development, skill acquisition and coaching methodology in the context of individual and group coaching programmes.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Plan, implement, assess and evaluate a programme of coaching for children within both a school setting and a community club.
  • Evaluate their own coaching and normally that of their peers.
Key Skills:
  • Work effectively with others in a professional setting.
  • Plan and manage their own learning and reflect on their experiences and learning.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The emphasis is very much on students to plan, manage and evaluate themselves and their coaching. Students are required to liaise closely with schools, teachers, co-ordinators and tutors and are encouraged to demonstrate leadership skills and take the initiative in managing the coaching programme. However, students will be supported in doing so by a whole host of people, e.g. Module co-ordinators, the placement officer, school mentor, school class teacher, and sports co-ordinator.
  • Students will be expected to record your progress in the Coaching Journal, which they will submit at points during and at the end of the course. The Coaching Journal will contain an initial checklist of relevant information, key learning points, session plans and evaluations.
  • Students are also required to produce a summative evaluation of all work undertaken at the end of the journal.
