  • Investigate the problems and benefits associated with embedded generation and the integration of new and renewable energy into electrical networks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the potential for and the limits to embedded generation growth. A1, A4.
  • Knowledge of modern design and operation trends in transmission and distribution networks. A1, A3.
  • Analysis of network requirements for electricity. A1, B2.
  • Able to undertake the design of an embedded generation project and produce a design report. A3, B1, B2, B3, B4, B6, B11, B13.
  • To be able to use a commercial power systems design software package effectively and to interpret the results and analyse them critically. B2, B3, B6, B12.

      • Lectures to cover findamental power system and embedded generation theories and current practice.
      • Assignment to provide the students with an appreciation of network integration issues and power flows around a modern electrical network.
      • The assigment will allow an assessment of the student's understanding of power system design and operation to be assessed.
      • Computer laboratory to appy the theoretical concepts and visualise power system behavious.
      • Examinations to assess knowledge, understanding and application.
