Aims
- To provide a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of health research management, ethics and governance. Each session is illustrated with clinical scenarios and case studies.
Content
- 1. Requirements of the UK Research Governance Framework and Information Governance
- 2. Research ethics: principles and practice
- 3. Mental Capacity and vulnerable populations
- 4. Developing applications in health research: validity, feasibility, viability
- 5. Project management
- 6. Managing difficulties and misconduct in research
- 7. Involving consumers and carers in health research
- 8. Requirements for auditing and monitoring research
- 9. Publishing and disseminating research
- 10. Principles of Good Clinical Practice and EU Directive – for GCP compliance
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Understand principles and law governing health research practice in UK
- Understand research ethics principles
- Understand Good Clinical Practice requirements
- Show an advanced awareness of how to effectively manage a complex research project
Subject-specific Skills:
- Undertaking research and practice at standards required by ‘Good Clinical Practice’
- Completing a satisfactory ethical application using current UK processes
Key Skills:
- Effective involvement of consumers and carers in health research at all stages from design to dissemination
- Professionalism and ethical awareness in discussion of research conduct dilemmas
- Manage research, both independently and in a team

- Lectures with essential knowledge on research governance requirements, including ethical practice
- Structured reading with self-paced materials which deepen learning
- Interactive seminars enabling students to learn in dialogue with active leading researchers, developing the ability to critically discuss problems and dilemmas in research practice.
- Workbook assignment including the development of an ethics application and reflection on consumer and carer involvement
- Essay assignment assessing project management skills and the ability to present a coherent plan for conducting a research project to completion
