Aims
- To teach to a high standard the principles and practical skills Health Service employees require in order to deliver Medical Education, Medical Assessment and Selection for Medical Posts within a clinical setting.
Content
- The delivery of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)
- The assessment of Clinical Skills as displayed within an OSCE setting
- Standard setting of OSCEs to high professional standards
- Selection for interview and the principles of structured interviewing
- Issues of reliability and validity relating to semi structured interviews
- Teaching of communication skills within a clinical setting
- Execution of Mini Clinical Examinations (MiniCEX)
- Assessment and analysis of MiniCEX with regard to validity and reliability
- The delivery of Multiple Objective Structured Long Examination Records (MOSLER)
- The assessment and analysis of MOSLER outcomes
- The delivery of tutorials to small groups of clinical learners at Undergraduate and Post Graduate level
- The delivery of small group teaching sessions in a clinical setting
- The delivery of large group teaching sessions in a clinical setting

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Lecturing – Explains basic principles in a way that allows learners to build their own understanding – Examines challenges in the literature, not readily resolvable but novices – Provides motivation to learners
- Tutorials and seminars – allow students to work through concepts in more detail, providing both teacher and peer led input, promoting discussion and developing the interprofessional communication and working skills
- Structured reading – Allows student to pursue topics in greater detail enabling both familiarity with key texts and a deeper understanding of the subject knowledge generally
- Observed sessions and practice
- Maintaining a reflective log of activities
- Distance learning mediated through Durham University Online with provision of structured teaching materials
