Aims
- To describe the mechanisms and consequences of disease processes at the cellular and tissue level.
- To describe the aetiology and consequences of selected diseases of the blood including anaemias and myelodysplasias.
- To consider the requirements for the successful application of transfusion science.
Content
- Cell growth disorders.
- Cell injury and death.
- Anaemia.
- Blood transfusion and banking.
- Haematopoiesis.
- Tissue responses to damage.
Learning Outcomes
- Abilty to describe the structural changes which may occur to cells and tissues during disease and relate these to underlying disease processes.
- Have a detailed knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms by which stress and injury affect cell structure and function.
- Have a knowledge of the application of routine staining procedures (including immunocytochemistry and immunofluorescence) for disease diagnosis.
- Have a detailed knowledge and understanding of diseases of haematopoiesis, the anaemias and myelodysplasias.
- Demonstrate an awareness of how blood component therapy can be used effectively and efficiently in order to optimise patient benefit.
- Identify the causes, signs and symptoms of haemolytic transfusion reactions and other adverse reactions and to have an awareness of the significance of serious hazards of transfusion reports.
- Be able to interpret critically the results of laboratory tests.
- To access and evaluate information from different sources and communicate this by written means.
