FREN2021: LOVE AND LONGING IN FRENCH LITERATURE OF THE ANCIENT REGIME

Prerequisites

• French Language 1 (FREN1011) OR an equivalent qualification to the satisfaction of the Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Corequisites

• Modern Languages, Combined Honours and all Joint and 'with' programmes: French Language 2 (FREN2051). Other: see Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Aims

• To give a general introduction to French literature of the 17th and 18th centuries by means of a detailed study of representative texts which illustrate the ways this period depicted and discussed rational and emotional behaviour: 'reason and passions'.
• To give a general introduction to developments in the theatre and the novel in the 17th and 18th centuries.
• To improve reading skills in French, techniques of literary analysis, and knowledge of French literature, history and culture.

Content

• Prescribed Texts (subject to change and revision).
• The module is taught in English and French and is examined in English.

Learning Outcomes

• Student will develop knowledge of French literature, history and culture.

• By the end of this module students should have improved reading skills in French and techniques of literary analysis.

• Skills in written argument and presentation.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

• This module is taught by means of a weekly lecture and fortnightly seminar. The module will be taught in English and French and assessed in English. Students are required to attend all lectures and seminars and are expected to prepare themselves for classes and participate actively in discussions.
