Aims

  • Opportunity to study another Slavonic language with particular emphasis on reading skills and communicative competence.

Content

  • To build on acquired basic competence in reading, writing, speaking and listening, grammatical knowledge and cultural awareness, with a view to developing social discourse skills and discuss general topics.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • To consolidate their knowledge of key grammatical points
  • To deepen their appreciation of how Croatian and Serbian are used differently in different contexts (both oral and written).
  • To gain practice in writing in Croatian or Serbian
Subject-specific Skills:
  • To increase confidence, fluency and accuracy in both productive (spoken and written) and receptive (listening and reading) skills in Croatian and Serbian
  • To read Croatian and Serbian of various registers in a wide range of media
  • To develop their language skills independently.
Key Skills:
  • Extended development of general written and oral communication skill.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module is taught in two strands:
  • In the grammar /translation class, students will consolidate their grammar knowledge and develop their translation skills through a variety of grammar-based language exercises and the translation of texts from and into English.
  • In the oral class a wide range of topics will be discussed, and students will develop their speaking skills through a range of oral activities (conversation, role-play, discussion and individual presentations)
