Aims

  • In year 2 students improve and expand their written and oral skills, expanding on the foundation of grammatical and syntactical accuracy consolidated at Level 1, so as to explore more sophisticated modes of verbal expression and variety of linguistic registers.

Content

  • This is the core language module for students who have taken module SPAN1072 Spanish Language 1B, and it is designed to reinforce and develop the Spanish language skills acquired in year 1.
  • Students will attend grammar, comprehension and oral classes, but will also be expected to work outside these to develop strategies for independent study, with particular emphasis on preparation for living and working abroad.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • This module is designed to consolidate and systematise grammatical understanding, expand vocabulary, increase fluency and enhance comprehension of spoken and written Spanish, and to develop students' knowledge of aspects of Hispanic cultures.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Students will develop improved skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking and linguistic abilities in Spanish.
  • By the end of the module, they should be able to demonstrate an adequate grasp of Spanish grammar, produce suitable written material and be able to communicate effectively and accurately in most everyday situations.
Key Skills:
  • Students will gain the ability to present information and/or construct an argument effectively in the target language.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Students must attend three classes per week, each of which will focus on the following skills:
  • (a) grammar and writing
  • (b) audiovisual (comprehension and listening)
  • (c) speaking
  • Oral and comprehension classes will be conducted exclusively in Spanish.
  • Grammar/writing classes will use English for explanation of grammatical structures and Spanish for practical exercises.
