Aims

• Be familiar with a range of EFL teaching material for different levels and contexts.
• Have the requisite skills to be able to evaluate the appropriateness of materials according to the age/level/cultural background/context of EFL learner classes.
• Have the ability to produce and develop their own materials based on understanding of ELT methodologies and theories.
• Have developed the ability to adapt and supplement materials according to the specific needs of the class.

Content

• This module is focussed on developing a theoretical and practical approach to materials design, evaluation and development. It involves students developing a practical understanding of the principles and procedures of the design, implementation and evaluation of language teaching materials. Through familiarisation with current approaches and methods in coursebook and materials design students will work with and adapt a range of published teaching materials for a variety of specific contexts. It will pay particular attention to issues of cultural and linguistic appropriacy, age and level of learners and current teaching methodology.

• Understanding of current approaches in designing and evaluating materials for a range of contexts.

• Ability to critically evaluate a range of ELT materials.
• Ability to select, adapt and develop a range of teaching materials for specific contexts.
• To provide a rationale for evaluation and development of materials drawing on current theory where possible.

• Ability to connect theoretical issues to an applied context.
• Ability to read and understand primary and secondary texts.
• Ability to draw on existing knowledge of language teaching theory and methodology.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

• Lectures will provide a background in current approaches to materials design and evaluation.
• This input will provide the basis for seminars on a range of current ELT materials: coursebooks, resourcebooks, supplementary materials.

Formative Assessment:

Presentation of materials production and rationale.
