Aims

  • To provide Distance Learning students, whose circumstances mean that they are unable to undertake a suitable project for a dissertation, with the opportunity to conduct an in-depth analysis at an advanced level of a specific issue which is applicable and relevant to business and/or management. The positioning of the business report at the end of the programme is intended to promote integration of material covered in the core and elective phases.

Content

  • The topic (which is formally approved by the Board of Examiners) should be a specific business/management problem or opportunity that is suitable for in-depth investigation.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the module students should have the ability, working independently, to:
  • critically analyse a specific business/management problem or opportunity in depth and to explore its significance in practice.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • By the end of the module students should have the ability, working independently, to:
  • critically apply knowledge and different forms of reasoning to form a discriminating analysis of a specific business/management problem or opportunity;
  • produce a detailed report on a specific business/management problem or opportunity, thereby further developing analytical and investigative skills needed to explore business and management problems in depth.
Key Skills:
  • By the end of the module students should have the ability, working independently, to:
  • have further developed the skills of self-organization and motivation in managing time and activities in working to a deadline.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Students work independently on the business report, in line with the learning outcomes which include the ability to work independently. There is no formal supervision.
