  • None. For students to be able to make use of this module, they must be in an active supervisory role themselves during the course of the teaching of the module.

Aims

  • to develop the skills of supervision for use in circuit and parish

Content

  • This module is designed to build competence in supervisory skills through the examination of the theory and practice of supervision in various related fields, as well as in ministerial training. It also uses case studies and the direct experience of participants using a reflective practice approach

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • At the end of the module students will be able to:
  • Explain and evaluate different methods of learning appropriate to a supervisory situation.
  • Set up a variety of different means of communication for supervisory purposes and assess their strengths and weakness for given situations.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Describe different styles of leadership and management of development needs and adapt them to the needs of those who are being supervised.
  • Develop strategies which allow the supervised to meet their full potential in a given situation and not only justify their approach pragmatically but also provide a theoretical framework.
Key Skills:
  • Develop a variety of assessment techniques to assess performance of the supervised.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • 30 hours contact time delivered in two residential periods. Contact time will include supervision sessions as well as lectures, and seminars. Staff will be available for individual consultation.

Formative Assessment:

Two formative assignments: assessment of a 2,500 word report on an aspect of the theory and practice of supervision and feedback on oral reporting of ongoing supervision work. Staff will also be available for individual consultation.


Attendance at all activities marked with this symbol will be monitored. Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
