Prerequisites

  • Grade B or above in German at A level (or its equivalent).

Corequisites

  • Modern Languages, Combined Honours and all Joint and 'with' programmes: German Language 1(I) (GERM1011). Other: see Chairman/Chairwoman of the Board of Studies in MLAC or his/her representative.

Excluded Combination of Modules

  • None.

Aims

  • This module will introduce students to two important German literary genres, drama and narrative.
  • The concern will be with the ways in which stories and plays work, how they communicate meaning to readers and spectators.
  • (This can then be applied to any plays and stories, from any period, in any language).

Content

  • The set texts usually include narrative works by Brentano, Grass, Kafka, Kleist and Mann, and plays by Brecht, B_, Holz/Schlaf, Lessing and Weiss.
  • The module works from first principles, no former knowledge of German literature is required.
