Aims

• To introduce a wide variety of literary texts from various periods and different genres.
• To introduce ways of reading texts which include analysis of form, narrative perspective, intertextuality, literary theory and some knowledge of the period in which the text was produced.
• To develop accurate academic writing skills
• To increase confidence in their personal response to literature.

Content

• Further develop familiarity with a variety of genres including poetry, the novel and drama from a variety of periods.
• Organise and express relevant information clearly, coherently and in an academic manner
• Introduce different ways of reading a text.
• Further develop the ability to express their responses to literature with confidence and with the correct terminology.

• Read a variety of texts in different genres and historical periods.
• Develop their ability to analyse texts in a critical manner.
• Produce written work in an accurate and clear way with increasing confidence and sophistication.

• Develop skills in literary criticism and close reading.
• Increase knowledge of a range of texts, authors, literary genres and critical techniques.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

• Teaching will be in the form of tutor- led classes and discussions.
• Learning and understanding will be consolidated through the use of exercises, group work, discussions, tutorials and students’ own study.
• Knowledge and skills will be assessed by a summative assignment and an examination as well as formative work.
