Aims

  • The module will involve students in undertaking a defined period of fieldwork based learning in a formal social/ youth/community work setting. Students will be engaging with an independent analysis of the organisational and policy aspects informing social work and community development practice.

Content

  • Introduction to field based learning
  • Ten day field based learning opportunity in a social/community work agency
  • Critical evaluation of organisational and policy related aspects of FBL

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • On completion of the module, students will have:
  • A critical understanding of the social/ community work agency they have been working with;
  • An appreciation of the organisational contexts of social and community work;
  • An ability to collect and collate relevant information relating to the agency under; study, including statistical information, perceptions of service users and practitioners;
  • An ability to carry out an agency study and present findings appropriately.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • On completion of the module, students will have:
  • an ability to relate research findings to policy and practice in a specialist field of study;
  • an ability to report findings effectively, draw conclusions based on research and locate these in the context of other research and literature;
  • an ability to comprehend, analyse and present complex concepts and arguments linked to social research
Key Skills:
  • On completion of the module students will have:
  • skills in collection, analysis and presentation of data;
  • an ability to work autonomously, taking a high level of responsibility for their work;
  • presentation skills;
  • communication skills
